Intel 5G Chip Testing 2019, Expected for 2020 iPhone

On the morning of November 13, news from foreign media said that Intel’s 5G chip is expected to be
used for iPhone testing next year, if it will be assembled to iPhone products in 2020.

Intel issued a press release to some foreign media, detailing that the company’s first 5G modem XMM
8160 will come faster than originally expected. In the next six months, Apple and other smartphone
manufacturers will be able to test the official products they launched in 2020.

Intel has advanced the release date of this modem for more than half a year. The XMM 8160 5G will
support peak speeds of up to 6gb per second, three to six times faster than the current LTE 4G, and will
be available in the second half of 2019.

However, Intel is also working hard to advance the production plan of this chip, which is very important
for future iPhone testing.

In addition to Apple, almost all mobile phone manufacturers are using Qualcomm’s 5G chips. At least 18
major companies – including Samsung, Nokia (HMD), Sony, Xiaomi, oppo, vivo, HTC, LG, Asus, ZTE, Sharp,
Fujitsu and One Plus – are working with Qualcomm and its Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem Cooperation.

In addition, Huawei and Samsung are also developing their own 5G modems.

Intel (Intel) pointed out that the first smartphone with the new XMM 8160 5G modem will be available
in the first half of 2020, but Apple may have to wait for the next version, 8161. This is in line with the
release of the new iPhone in the second half of 2020.

It is said that Apple is still in contact with MediaTek, which is also the cooperation of 5G chips.

Earlier we reported that Apple was “not very satisfied” with Intel because Intel failed to solve the heat
dissipation problem of the 8060 modem chip. But even so, Apple did not consider negotiating with
Qualcomm to restart the 5G chip.
