Facebook: Project Aquila

According to FCC Filings, we have learned several things about Facebook’s moves on Project Aquila

“Facebook, as part of its Internet.org project, is currently developing high altitude aircraft that can serve as an important component of worldwide broadband access. “
“Facebook’s Project Aquila has been testing remotely-piloted, solar-powered aircraft that would station-keep in the stratosphere to enable high capacity backhaul for mobile operators and other service providers.”

Facebook is currently in the process of studying spectrum bands that were agreed upon at the ITU’s 2015 World Radiocommunication Conference for HAPS, including the 38-39.5 GHz band, which was identified for study on a global level.

Don’t get too excited about Facebook potentially replacing your Comcast service because as of filings early 2016: “Facebook does not provide, and currently has no plans to provide, connectivity solutions in the United States. However, Facebook’s mission to make the world more connected is affected by the Commission’s decisions in this proceeding.”
